TISSUE WORLD ASIA - Show Report

IKS Klingelnberg booth at Tissue Asia 2010Shanghai…China's dynamic growth has taken the world by storm. And nowhere was that more evident than at Tissue World Asia 2010 which recently concluded in the major Chinese metropolis, Shanghai from 17 – 19 November.

The Exhibition was again held at INTEX Exhibition Center and all space at the show was fully booked with gross 6000 sqm.Exhibitors numbered over 165 and were an impressive cross-section of international buyers and manufacturers. Visitor attendance was also up with a 6% increase from the 2008 event.
Another positive trend was the number of high level executives in attendance, many of whom were looking to purchase new machinery and equipment. And big exhibitors from over a dozen countries further underlined the international prestige that Tissue World has steadily become famous for
.
The Tissue World Asia show also saw a marked increase in the quality of visitors at the event. Most were senior executive personnel such as managers and other decision-makers who were capable of writing new business on the spot. This has further increased the effectiveness of the exhibition as a positive networking event.
With the growth of Asean economies now leading the world, China's importance in the booming paper industry cannot be underestimated. Tissue World has certainly become a respected part of the industry and Tissue World Asia 2010 further confirmed this importance.

Maintenance and Repair of Machines and Tools from a Knife Manufacturer's Point of View

Optimum cutting performance of machine knives does not only require observance of their setting parameters but the framework conditions of the machines have to be appropriate, too.

When adjusting transverse blades, we are talking about hundredths of a mm; in this respect, equipment and tools have to be in a perfect condition.
When setting circular blades, special attention is to be paid to overlapping of blades, contact pressure, shear plane angle, and forward slip.

New MAGNETIC KNIFE GUARD by IKS Klingelnberg improves occupational safety and protects the knife from chipping

Throughout the world, 270 million occupational accidents occur every year. Occupational accidents have different causes often. The main reasons are avoiding safety devices or a missing safety concept. An occupational accident may result in damages to health accompanied by working time lost and damages to machines, tools, and materials. Companies incur a great risk as regards human resources and have to compensate absence of skilled personnel at short notice and considerable expense.
Changing knives presents an increased risk of accidents in book binder's workshops and postpress. Knives are often changed under minimum space conditions and without using a blade protection. This presents a considerable safety risk for users and machine operators. Moreover, the sensitive blade can be damaged easily by handling mistakes, in particular during installation and transport.
IKS Klingelnberg attended to this topic and developed a magnetic knife guard which optimally satisfies the requirements regarding occupational safety and protection of the knife.

New coating method for steel cord shears prevents adherence of rubber

IKS Klingelnberg shear blades are used in the production process of car tires.
A tire consists of different components. From the outside, a tire is made up of a cover, sidewall, and heel.
In the inside, these elements are supported by the carcass. The carcass is covered with a bracing ply which is made of several layers of rubber-lined steel wire fabric (steel breaker tire). The threads in these bracing plies are in an acute angle to one another. The tire is thereby provided with resistance, fitness for high speed, and durability.
Bracing plies are cut by means of shear blades. In doing so, rubber often adheres to the blade which may result in considerable impairment of the cutting process.

Today, the newspaper "Bergische Morgenpost" reports on the family-friendly company IKS Klingelnberg

In the competition "Familienfreundliche Unternehmen im Bergischen Städtedreieck 2009" (Family-friendly companies in the three important cities of the region Bergisches Land 2009) arranged by the local Chamber of Industry and Commerce, IKS Klingelnberg won first place.
The jury decided in favor of the manufacturer of cutting tools in particular due to the flexible working times for young parents in their stressful phase of life.
"We have a lot of employees who had a baby lately", says Meyer. In conjunction with the human resources manager Dirk Lehmkühler, the company management strives for individual solutions for the young mothers in order to cushion the impacts of the double burden.

We are aware of their well-founded know-how, experience gained in the company - many of them have already contributed to the company since their apprenticeship - and high commitment: Resources which the company does not want to miss; thus it finally was all about give-and-take and a win/win situation on either side, summarizes Meyer.

Paper Cutting Knife – Brazing versus Gluing

Brazing and gluing are the two rival joining technologies in the production process of paper cutting knives.

IKS Klingelnberg focuses on the brazing technology — a thermal procedure which ensures considerably higher tensile strength and reduces maintenance costs. The joining agent is a meltable metal alloy which is also called brazing metal. It reaches a tensile strength of about 200 N/mm² which is thus four times as high as that obtained by the gluing technology.

Brazing is state-of-the-art at IKS Klingelnberg.

Enhanced Cutting Edge Quality for Log Saw

The log saw is an extremely sharp knife which is used in production of hygienic paper. This is why the cutting edge protection is of particular importance for operators and knife. Usually, the protection is made of one layer of plastic material. As the sharp log saw easily cuts through the plastic material protection and thus subjects the operator of the machine to hazards, IKS Klingelnberg developed a 3-layer cutting edge protection.
The inner layer which is made of plastic material protects the extremely sharp cutting edge of the knife.
An intermediate metal layer prevents cutting through and the outer layer made of plastic and textile material provides for easy handling thanks to the good grip.

Above-average safety at the work place is thus given.

The ecological flange saw SWITCH

The production of circular saw blades normally implements high expenditures in the form of costs of manufacture and expenses for raw materials. Normally, a flange saw abrades at the saw blade and not at the body, the so-called flange. However, traditionally the saw is grounded out of one piece and this is why both parts of the saw need to be replaced when the saw blade shows abrasion marks.

The Böhler Miller Messer und Sägen GmbH (BMMS) is now introducing the cost-efficient and dyadic flange saw “SWITCH”. Instead of the conventional, discharged saw blade the company constructed a plane one, which is offered separately from the flange. Both parts are bolted together. Thus, considerable raw material costs can be saved, since the body of the saw is reusable. Additionally, the wastage of steel in the production process is significantly diminished. This is underlining the ecological principle of the saw.

The new flange saw is not inferior to the traditional one. To the contrary, it works with the same cutting parameters as the conventional saw and is available in different versions. The diameter, the coating of the surface and the number of teeth are variable. Moreover, the saw offers a better cost-performance ratio and lower costs of maintenance (solid quality and easy handling at low acquisition costs), as the evenness of the saw blade can be adjusted a lot easier.

Today, BMMS holds a patent on their invention and delivers the “Eco Saw” to prestigious costumers.

Diacarb finds the solution for improvement of the knife performance at Henri Wintermans Cigars (the Netherlands)

Henry Wintermans Cigars – established in Eersel in the Netherlands – has grown into the second largest cigar manufacturer in the world. The product portfolio includes world-famous brands such as Café Crème, Colts, Mercator, Henri Wintermans Founder’s Blend and Petit.

In the Leuven-settlement (in Belgium) Henri Wintermans Cigars and Diacarb initiated some tests to improve the performance of the knifes which are being used to cut the cigars and cigarillos.

Michael De Ridder, technical advisor for Diacarb in Belgium: "Henri Wintermans was trying out Tungsten Carbide circular knives from other suppliers before, but the knife performance was not in proportion to the price. Diacarb is the only one who is capable to polish the entire knives. The results were better already than before and the dust formation had been reduced substantially.
For phase 2 of the tests the knives have been provided with a special coating. With this coating the knife performance 'jumped' to a substantial higher level: from 1 to 2 weeks with the polished knives to 2 to 3 months!"

Diacarb was glad to receive the first orders for these circular knives, not only for the Leuven-settlement, but also for the Eersel-settlement.

Vocational Training is of Great Importance

"In the IKS Klingelnberg group, vocational training is extremely important", says Dirk Lehmkühler, personnel manager. At IKS Klingelnberg in Remscheid about 13 young people per year have been trained as industrial clerks, management assistants in informatics, specialists for administration of inventory and precision mechanics throughout the last years.
Furthermore, as from summer 2009 one vocational training position combined with studies will be offered. Recently, all apprentices of the German IKS Klingelnberg sites met in Bargteheide near Hamburg for exchange of information and project work.
By product trainings, presentation of various production methods and project work, an understanding of the group-wide IKS Klingelnberg philosophy was to be given especially to the apprentices in their first year of vocational training.
IKS Klingelnberg belongs to a medium-sized group of companies which operates on an international scale and is one of the leading manufacturers of machine knives for the paper, metal, wood and plastics processing industry in the world.
